New Love.

I've discovered a new love on campus: the South/Southeast Asian Library. Would would have thought? Beautiful books written in beautiful scripts. Volumes of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Maps, paintings and photographs. Comfy chairs, a cool breeze, and absolute quiet. I love it.

tomorrow i'm flying out to california with luis. he has a show at redlands college with gym class heroes. should be a good show.. i hope! the tickets were really expensive so i could see it being bad for merch though.

i originally wanted to go and make a weekend out of the trip, go to the beach and do something fun in LA... but luis has been gone so much he doesn't feel like doing the whirlwind weekend trip i guess. so now we are flying back saturday afternoon, and i'm just going as the merch girl and car - renter (i'm the only one with the credit card, ha!)

i think i'm going to be sad to be going to california and not staying!
but.. we are staying at a nice hotel, and it's about 5 miles from santa monica so i'm hoping i can get up early saturday morning before our flight and go to the beach by myself :p
i can't go all that way and not see the ocean!! :)

what I learned today Phillipians 4:1-3

Philippians 4:1-3 (NIV)
1Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown [Stephanos], that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!

Exhortations
2I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree [Phronesis] with each other in the Lord. 3Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Our church has been studying Philippians for a long time now. We started the first week in January08 with chapter one verse one. Eleven months down the line we are just beginning with chapter four. This book, this letter, written by Paul in prison, just pulls and tears at my heart. I can feel the words he is writing. Especially this week. My group of friends, who are my church, are going through this situation. I thank God for the timing of his teachings. I feel these few verses have given me so much clarity and I want to share it with you, my friends.

Lets start with verse one where Paul writes, “my brothers [and sisters], you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown”. The word “crown” in Greek is Stephanos. Stephanos is an athletic term like the crown or victory wreath placed upon your head in the Olympics. Its the breaking of the ribbon at the end of a marathon. Its the gold medal around your neck. Thats exactly how I feel about my brothers and sisters in the church. They are my joy and the medal I wear around my neck. I take great pride in them. We are deeply invested and committed, much like the Olympian or athlete to his or her sport, to the growth of each other to lead a more Christ-like life daily.

On to verse two, “I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord.” Euodia and Syntyche were two women in the Phillipian church who were at odds with each other or had a disagreement that affected the whole body of the church. The word “agree” in Greek is Phronesis. Phronesis is also used in Philippians 2:5 “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus” to give you some more context and meaning behind the word. Phronesis is our mindset, to be in agreement, to be of one mind, to adopt the same Christ-like pattern. Its interesting to note what Paul did not say. He did not take sides or say who is right or who is in the wrong. It is not about justification.

Its as if Paul were saying, “I'm pleading with you and I'm pleading with you because everything is so connected. I'm sitting here in prison, miles and miles away, and your division is tearing me apart.” Even though we may be hundreds or thousands of miles apart we are so deeply rooted within each other, in Christ. That is what it all comes down to: the body of Christ is an integrated whole. One piece affects another. We are not separate parts and pieces. That is the ultimate lie of the modern era. The modern era has taught us how to break things down to its smallest most intricate parts and yet it has impaired us at seeing things as a whole. Its not about two people and one broken friendship. Friends of friends are involved. The whole body is touched. In verse three he says, “help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel”. I see two of my friends, who have been right there with me in the cause of the gospel, who have been down in the trenches with me, and are now at odds with each other. Its breaks my heart. It breaks the hearts of those around them. It hurts the body of Christ. We have worked so hard together and yet we let something get in the way. We let the enemy in with his division. Thats what he wants is for us not to be whole and united.

A few other things to cover:
Proverbs 26:11 - As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.
Some people are toxic and have toxic ways which they will return to and its OK to have boundaries. We do not have to let things be done to us over and over again and again.

Titus 3:10 - Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.
A divisive person is one who causes division. They may have a bent heart or some sin that they need to deal with. We can speak up, or warn them, but we might have to step back and let them deal with that sin. It goes along with what I said above about boundaries.

Proverbs 17:9 - He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
Gossip is a great example. If one part of the body says harsh and nasty things about another part of the body it is going to affect both people and those around them. Now love can cover that offense. Things can be made new. But if that gossip carries on, if someone repeats the matter, it can cause separation of close friends. When we are offered information, or made known of a story or situation, maybe we should asks ourselves: Would Love repeat this?

Proverbs 10:12 - Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.
How beautiful is love? Love covers all wrongs. Hatred does the opposite. It brings on disagreements and fights. We have two directions to go in. Everything inside of you will want to hate the one who wronged you. Thats such an easy path. But love, love will cover it all. We have a choice and love is a beautiful choice.

So to you, my brothers and sisters, my cherished crowns, my gold medals that I wear around my neck, I plead with you and I plead with you to adopt the same Christ pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting. We have been and worked through too much to let it all fall away. Christ is before all things and in him all things hold together.

Next Semester

I will be taking a course with Ralph Nader's sister.

My Proposed Spring Semester Schedule:
Anthropology 114: History of Anthropological Thought
Anthropology 124AC: Hawaiian Ethnohistory
Anthropology 139P: Controlling Processes (with Nader)
Religious Studies C 166: India's Great Epics - The Mahabharata and the Ramayana
Middle Eastern Studies 198: Mizrahi Music and the Construction of Israeli National Culture
Hebrew 106B: Elementary Hebrew

...surely one of these will have to go, and this is the list already after I've cut it back a bit. I don't really want to take Anthro 114 or 124 but those of course are the two I'm required to finish off my Anthro major. The MES class will help me when I write my honors thesis, and will help me build a relationship with Professor Gottreich. Hebrew I need to continue for graduate work. And The Mahabharata and Ramayana are just too fucking rad... Next semester will be insane. I hope I survive.

I can't fucking believe it.

I have faith in the American people for the first time. Ever. I feel so fortunate to be here in Berkeley while something this monumental is going down. And I can't believe Meg is actually in Chicago, that is amazing.

Anyway, I first found out while I was walking through campus and passed the campus bar on Sproul and heard people screaming and jumping up and down but it was too early I didn't think it could possibly be true. Then I met Sarah at the library cafe and everyone was cheering and watching McCain's concession and then people stormed the library screaming and running up and down and through the stacks and Sofie showed up and said there was a huge group of people marching through campus and she got caught up in them as they made their way to Sproul.

Then Sofie and I walked Sarah home and people were lighting fireworks and honking all up and down Shattuck and we made our way to Becketts and got some celebratory beers and met up with Tomas and drank and smoked and laughed and screamed and they spoke French together and I got really jealous because they're both so beautiful and have seen so much more of the world than I have and I got sad for a very brief while. But then fuck it OBAMA WON and life is wonderful and we ran out into the streets and stopped traffic and cheered and clapped and slapped the hands of the passengers of the cars as they drove down the streets honking and I couldn't believe this many people were getting this excited over a politician. Or their country in general. It was a good night. A very good night.
